you will need a BC (Raised seal), and second ID, such as a driverslicense.

A passport isn't necessary but it does make travel a whole lot easier. St Maarten accepts a Birth Certificate (with raised seal) and a Photo ID.

If you enter French St Martin first, yes you need passport. Most enter Dutch St. Maarten, and raised seal birth certificate and photo ID works.

I think the law changed and that you do need a passport to enter Juliana airport whatever your citizenship is...They are becoming tougher on imigration, too many people just came here claiming staying 15 days in vaccation and over all staying to work illegally. They are doing a lot of crack down on imigration now, so I suggest that you are getting a passport to do not have any bad surprised at arrival. I also suggest that you are inquiring with your air line carrier they will be the one who will be abble to answer the question properly they might have different aggreement with SXM authorities, and they are responsible for your travel...So they won't let you go without a passport if you need one. Good luck.

Jeff,

Get a passport. They now last for 10 years and just make things easier. I missed out on a day trip from Aruba to Venezuela due to lack of passport. Returned 5 years later with passport in hand and had a grand time. There are similar side trips from SXM where you need one, or so I'm been told.

Plus, you get pretty stamps that you can show off to colleagues, kids, and grandkids.

Enjoy your visit.

Jeff,

You may or may not need it to get on the plane and you may or may not need it to get into St. Maarten and depending on what other islands you might or might not visit and whether you visit as a daytripper off a snorkelling trip or as a day visitor through the various immigration centers you may or may not need the passports there.

Since you can't seem to get a clearcut concensus on this particular topic, if I were you, I'd do EVERYONE a big favor and GET THE PASSPORT because the one thing that's for sure here is it will certainly speed up the immigration process at Princess Julianna Airport on this first trip and if you ever choose to return, you'll be able to zip right through. All the people standing around you waving their passports and wiping their brows will be very grateful to you for doing this.

Respectfully,

pat
