Organized by Ocean Conservancy, ICC is worldwide and I'm glad to say St. Maarten participates, thanks to SXM Pride.
Over 250 volunteers came together this morning to clean up Mullet Bay beach.
It was fun and inspiring and Mullet Bay beach looks great!
I put some pictures on my blog.
Take a look. and as I said in my blog, I am proud to be a St. Maartener today.

yes, they always do Mullet. truthfully it's the only beach that can handle 600 volunteers and has the parking. every other beach has been overdeveloped with no parking.

They do smaller beach clean ups at different times though.
One of the schools did on the other day.
and the first week in October some crew members from one of the cruise ships will be doing community service and cleaning up Guana bay.
But the big one is always Mullet bay.
I hate those damn cigarette butts too! thumbs down

I can't imagine how much garbage can be found on the other beaches when so many bags were collected on Mullet alone. This is such a good thing! My nephew and his wife arrived yesterday afternoon and so I told them about how clean Mullet beach will be. They'll probably be heading out there today. They are our first official house guests at Rainbow. I felt like an expectant mother, without the nausea.... >grinning smiley<

Barbara,

Congratulations to you for finally seeing a St. Maarten beach at 7a.m.....:uh, er, um, you did make it on time, right??

On a more serious note, it's always a wonder to me that so much trash collects there from year to year but we know it does and SXM Pride has proven the point once again. Without Jadira's groups annual effort, I hate to think of what that once pristine beach might actually look like. One thing I do know for sure, back in the day - the management of Mullet Bay Resort kept that area impeccably clean and it's always a shock to those of us who knew her 'when' to see what has happened there over the past few years....

The butt can is a great idea - now if only people will use it. Even as a reformed smoker it still grosses me out to see the butts in the sand when it's so easy to extinguish them in a soda can or a beer bottle and take them with you at the end of the day.

But again, sincere congrats to the good people of St. Maarten, residents and visitors alike, for doing their bit and keeping their beaches beautiful.

Respectfully,

pat
